<thefluffyshrimp> Welcome to ASKtheARTIST. My name is *thefluffyshrimp and today I have the great privilege to interview =ElephantWendigo, an incredibly talented artist and creator of many beautiful works.

<thefluffyshrimp> Thank you for presenting us with this opportunity to interview you, ElephantWendigo.

<ElephantWendigo> Hi everybody! It's a pleasure to be here!

<thefluffyshrimp> ~kkunkitty asks "Where do you get your inspiration?"

<ElephantWendigo> Oh, this is a really hard question, and it needs time to reply but I'll try to summarize. I love to be inspired by music, and from fashion photography. Also I have many favourite artists, from deviantART and from all around the world.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~Rzeitgeist asks "What inspired your characters for Cybersteel?"

<ElephantWendigo> Oh, we're lucky today because my collaborator is on my left side. He's also following the chat (xthesoul87x). Well, it may sound predictable but the story is based on roleplaying stories created together. The protagonists are also based on us. The other characters are all from our mind, and especially from the evil mind of my collaborator. Did I mention he's my boyfriend too? Funny thing!

<thefluffyshrimp> ~Schlissel-art asks "Do you have any advice to share with other artists/aspiring artists?"

<ElephantWendigo> Well, guys, art is beautiful and making art is one of the best gifts and passions a person could have in life. So, if you love art and want to make art then just do it: you don't need to have expensive tools for making art. My personal suggestion is also to not be easily satisfied with your work. If you reached a style is a huge improvement, but then you should work hard to evolve it to something new. Never be still! This is my personal advice.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~kkunkitty asks "How long does it take to finish a drawing?"

<ElephantWendigo> It depends. I'm into many styles and sometimes (often!) I love to improvise. A sketch may take 30/40 minutes. A finished painting in colors may take more than 12 hours. I'm talking about digital art, though.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~PrinceScream asks "Please, tell us about the feelings that connect you to your favorite characters! Have you got something in common with them? "

<ElephantWendigo> Oh, nice question! I think the main problem is they're all part of me, not the contrary. I mean, for creating a character you need to identify with them: even if the character is an evil god who wants to destroy the world, he must be credible. And, to create a credible character, you should balance his good part to his evil part.

<ElephantWendigo> So the main thing about them is, I'm not like them but I should be able to understand them enough, as if I was an actor who's playing them.

<thefluffyshrimp> *Ilman-Lintu asks "Are there any new tools or techniques you've never used but want to try as soon as you get an opportunity (or forgotten ones maybe)?"

<ElephantWendigo> I'd love to try my new markers, but somehow they're still closed in my closet. I'm lazy when it comes to traditional art lately.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~kkunkitty asks "Do you have a favorite artist?"

<ElephantWendigo> Sure. I have many. I could mention them since many of them are from dA: Akira Atsushi,*HamletMachine, *St-Boomer, =Virus-AC, *andrahilde, *Paexiedust, and many others.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~xJessie-chan asks "What inspired your style?"

<ElephantWendigo> I'm into semi-realism, I think. I took inspiration mostly from the Final Fantasy art style and from other semi-realism, realistic manga artists and cartoonists.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~The-Graphics-Corner asks "Do you use live models for helping you draw your original characters?"

<ElephantWendigo> I use many references from pictures, from time to time, but I prefer pictures over live models because I don't have real models available. XD

<thefluffyshrimp> ~Melancholy-Minds asks "Have you received any formal artistic training or are you a self-taught artist?"

<ElephantWendigo> Yes. I studied art at school, but it was all about copying sculptures and busts with traditional techniques. I'm not saying it was boring because I really enjoyed it, but I would have loved to learn how to use a digital tablet.

<thefluffyshrimp>*Ilman-Lintu asks "What was the most unexpected thing anyone told you lately (about your art?)"

<ElephantWendigo> I love, sometimes, when my characters are compared to other unexpected characters or historical figures. The funniest moment was when my character named Anger was compared to Abraham Lincoln. Amazing moments!

<thefluffyshrimp> ~Schlissel-art asks "Do you get art block and if so what do you do to get over art block?"

<ElephantWendigo> I think art block is really hard to fight. I always tried to get over it, and I failed as well. It's impossible to obtain inspiration when you're not in the mood, physically and mentally speaking. You could try changing your bad mood, instead of searching for inspiration. Maybe it would be useful.

<ElephantWendigo> I'm using the 'hypothetical' you.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~Rzeitgeist asks "What is it like working a manga style in Italy?"

<ElephantWendigo> Funny thing. In Italy many artists are simply against manga art. Many persons don't even think it's art at all! I don't think I draw manga anymore though, but when I used to draw in this style, well, I had issues with many people who didn't like it.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~kkunkitty asks "When did you start drawing?" and "What program do you use for your digital art?"

<ElephantWendigo> I started when I was 12, so 13 years ago. I practiced Akira Toriyama's style and Walt Disney's. For drawing digitally I use Paint Tool SAI and Photoshop to fix the colors.

<thefluffyshrimp> *Ilman-Lintu asks "Is it hard to keep on creating new stories for you when you already have several very detailed ones? (I mean you have the Cybersteel and the Heir and you keep working on those and adding details... like is there chance to ever hear the story of the Deer God for example?)"

<ElephantWendigo> Oh, I like creating stories but I also like creating characters without a background story. Sometimes I develop it, sometimes not. The Deer God is just a good example of a character without a story. The story is already written somewhere in my mind; I just have to write it down when I need it. Now, I'm not in the mood, I think.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~StreetHal0 asks "I think it's a very silly question, but how would you describe yourself as an artist? Perfectionist, hard worker, lazy or…?"

<ElephantWendigo> Totally a random/lazy one. I'm not a perfectionist at all. I prefer my sketches over my finished drawings. I couldn't be a perfectionist.  :o)

<thefluffyshrimp> ~Kharagauli "Is there something you would absolutely never draw?"

<ElephantWendigo> I drew furries when I was a child but I don't like to draw them anymore. But maybe I will. Who knows?!

<thefluffyshrimp> ~Kharagauli asks "Which of your characters is closest to yourself (both in your affection to them and most similar to your own character)?"

<ElephantWendigo> If a single character of mine would really be like myself, well, I think I would hate him/her. But the closest one would be Alex, but only in terms of his tastes. They're complementary to mine.

<thefluffyshrimp>~kkunkitty asks "How long does it take to get acquainted to Photoshop? Is it easy or hard?"

<ElephantWendigo> I studied it in high school and it took me 3 years to manage every single option. I don't use it for painting, though. Just for minor adjustments.

<thefluffyshrimp> ~Schlissel-art asks "Is there anything you would really like to improve at in drawing?"

<ElephantWendigo> Everything! I think I should work more on two characters poses. And painting skills. And backgrounds. And... and... so many things!

Oh. I like this interview. I especially am interested in the part where you said some Italians don't consider anime an art style lol I know some people didn't consider it a style but this is the first time I heard another country didn't consider it as one either! very interesting ^_^ Is it possible you could say more on that? lol

I was talking about art teachers in school, and many comic artists. Italian comics are drawn in a more 'realistic' style, even if stylized as well (for example, Bonelli's comics like Dylan Dog and Tex).
So, the result is this: people who studied art and 'normal' people as well, quite dislike stylized comics and art, and manga is just one of them.
Not to mention Italy is the country of Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano, Raffaello, Caravaggio...We just have many examples of good realism in art hystory, and sometimes we're unable to see different things.
