Today I have a nice topic to share with you.
I've been on this site since I was 19. It was 2006 and now 6 years passed.
I was a total noobie in digital art, I didn't even own a graphic tabled and I used to paint over my drawings with the mouse in Photoshop.
I used to draw in manga/anime style and I never attempted semi-realism but I always loved the Final Fantasy art style and I always wanted to draw faces like those.
My drawings in 2006/2008 looked like this.
And amy first digital drawings looked like this.

The first thing I noticed is this. When I used to draw in manga style I received less criticism to my works, even if the anatomy in my drawings was really awkward.
The first question that came to my mind was:
I must say it's a lot HARDER to draw in Semi-realism style and I often need photo references to start a work, sometimes just to make sure the body structure is good enough. It's also full of details and huge amounts of details mean increase of possible errors.
So, after have drawn in manga/anime for ages I can say semi-realism is more difficult than manga, but this wasn't the real point of this issue.
Even many quality (and popular) artworks of this site contain anatomical/compositional/symmetry errors as well, but I would personally never point it out, until the artist ask for a critique.
In fact, I hate to write critique on other people's work, because I prefer to examine the strengths of a single work.
I must admit sometimes I'm a little puzzled when I read a comment over my drawings from a stranger, containing a detailed summary of things that don't work in it. Sometimes those messages come from one of my older watchers and I really appreciated when they point out the errors in my works, because I know they just want to help me improving.
Other times, I have the feeling that people just make a critique because they want to show the person behind a 'popular' account doesn't worth his/her popularity.
This is just my feeling, but I would love to hear your opinion.
