Anatomy Lessons: How to improve faster in 6 steps!
'Life Drawing 5' by ~algaegoblin
Do you know how to sketch human figures but do you want to refine your anatomy skills? Or do you not know anatomy at all and you are tired to trust your imagination? Did you notice you create disproportions in your drawings?
If you are aspiring artists and you already have your own style, you might as well believe you have no need of a guide, but you are wrong. Before exaggerating human proportions and begin to have your own style, you first have to know the basics.
This little guide is the result of an accurate research and 5 years of high school of art, and it's created for all those who want to learn something new or just make a useful review.
For those who have already studied art, my suggestion is to go to step 6 or trying to repeat all steps in Digital format.
First of all, if you want to learn faster you should draw using traditi

Character Design: An introduction
Arvalis-2012 by `arvalis
What does 'Character Design' mean?
The character design is the process which comes after the characterisation and consists in defining the character through his/her physical appearance.
We need to consider a character as a little fictional creature, human or not, that aims to please its creator and the public as well.
While the basic characterization of this fictional creature (his tastes, his fears, his behaviors) may take a little mental effort, as it is a sort of list of emotions, facts and feelings that come and go in the life of a character, the process of visual realization of this creature may not be as simple. That's why many writers and characters creators prefer to rely on experienced hands.
Also many of the mental aspects of the character are not possible to gain by using 'static' visual medium. For 'static' I mean all the illustrations and drawings unable to tell a

Alex Vondran is a private investigator, ambitious and arrogant, money is just one of his weaknesses. Always self-centered and hot-headed since the first chapters, Alex changes a lot when he meets Kevin Stone, apparently a sloppy nerd with a huge moral, who is, on the contrary, a thief and a computer hacker. Alex boss has asked him to investigate on Kevin and Alex understand that Kev is exactly the person who damaged the Multinational Company of his boss.
The problem is that Alex is starting to feel 'something' for that guy: Kevin is his first friend and he trusts him… So Alex decides to run away with Kevin and then he starts a war a lot bigger than him.
A specialist's hired from Alex's boss to kill Alex and Kevin. Kevin has stolen a huge amount of money from the multinational banks, and Alex has helped him to escape. When the killer is near to Kevin, the guy emanated a huge and paranormal shock wave.
Retro / Vintage Photo EditingRetro / Vintage Photo Editing
Turn your digital photography into film-photo resembling pieces of art with these tips!
written by `miontre for Community Week in %projecteducate
Photo editing is fun. It gives you a chance to add something to your photos, and really bring out expressions you may or may have not realised were there. Lately, I've been obsessed with retro and vintage editing effects in my editing, to try and replicate film photographs. Of course, it's impossible to replicate actual film photos, but I think that's what makes it fun: you can do anything you want and it doesn't matter if it looks realistic or not. It's about artistic freedom, and enjoying yourself! I've found myself in a vast world of endless possibilities and I can't wait to continue and try new things. I've found that it's a difficult category to work in, since there's not such a large support community for it on deviantART, but I enjoy it nonetheless!
First up, let's take a lo

What's that? A little * has replaced my beloved ~ next to my username! What happened, and what can I do with it?!
Relax, dear reader, for you have achieved a step to making your life only slightly easier on deviantART! Getting a premium membership opens you up to many more possibilities to fill your time on this green website.
If you have a premium membership, there may be a couple of reasons why. One is the obvious reason: you bought one.
Right at the top of your screen - under the "Shop" drop-down list - is a directory that leads you to the premium membership.... buying page.
There's also another button right next to the "Shop" that does the same thing
You could have also been gifted one by another generous deviant!
Canvas sizes - inches and dpi and pixelsThis is a sort of guide on canvas sizes, inches, dpi and pixel x pixels.
when it came to canvas sizes, I always kind of assumed that inches belonged with dpi and pixels were just pixels and that everyone knew that; but i read a whole bunch of comments on a tumblr blog where someone asked about canvas sizes, and SO MANY people were replying with things such as, "4000x4000 px at 300 dpi" or "2000x2000 px at 200dpi".
and I guess not everyone quite understands what dpi's really used for xD.
DPI = Dots per Inch. It means how many dots will be printed per inch.
DPI is actually used for printing purposes. It shows the printer how much pixels to print per inch, literally. A common printer (at home or even at a lot of printing stores) at best prints at 150dpi most of the time actually; there are some super duper great printers that can print REALLY fine that can go up to ...apparently a lot more xD; #dpi, so that's why everyone usually suggests saving your project at 300dpi; most printers are f
The Literature Community ExperimentThis is a typical example of a ^Beccalicious shower pondering! The idea of this is to try and bring together as many people as possible all in one journal, but not for the sake of making a big number, but to encourage interaction and share useful tidbits. We often say the "literature community" has drifted apart over the past few years and this is just one attempt to try get people to come back together. It's a little hippy, perhaps a far-fetched idea, which is why I am calling it an "experiment". This could be successful and could be a complete fail- only you guys and your efforts can decide its fate!
Wow! The response for this has been HUGE!!! Thank you so much all of you who have participated! Don't forget to add %CRLiterature to your watch as well as replying to all these wonderful comments!
So you may be new to the literature side of deviantART, or you may be one of those long
DA's Commission System and Minimum WageDA has recently announced a new portal for users to search through those offering commissions to find artists they want to support.
The commissions system will be handled using DA's internal currency system of points, of which DA takes a royalty from.
Commissions are allowed to start at 10 points each for any type of art produced, from rough sketches and small icons to full digital works. Commissions is a great way for artists to offer their services, but are we creating a low-wage market where over-abundance of supply and lack of unification undercuts everyone?
That is to say, how can we guarantee that artists get paid fairly for their work?
10 points is roughly 13 cents. 1000 points may seem like a large commission, but it's really only $10.
Right now DA takes a 20
Celebrating Diversity #12This edition of Celebrating Diversity I want to focus on two extremes of art: Extremely detailed and realistic works and minimal and abstract art. Both tendencies or trends have their place and time in art and history and are appreciated by many people. Not always does one person like both, but to me personally, art has always been more about feeling, than about complexity. Something simple can touch me emotionally as well as something blasting with details. Art is just as individual as every human being!
How do you feel about these tw
No One Cares About Your StoryGOOD NEWS: This is perfectly normal!
I can't remember the source, but a few years ago I read this famous author's account of how it felt to have his first book come out, and he mentioned buying a copy himself because he was afraid no one would take an interest. Now this is a guy who managed to get not only an agency but a publisher (which is a whole pile of people who were like yesplz), and he's still afraid readers won't care. I was like, 'whoa mind blown.'
But anyway, the fact is that we are all strangers on the Internet and, by default, there is no reason for you to read my stuff or vice-versa. If you went and stood in Times Square with copies of your latest story, how many people would give you more than a passing glance? And how many of those people would get to the end of your work, and how many of those would offer critical feedback?
And, if you were one of the passersby, whom would you stop for?
Okay, I'm done scaring the shi
How to Remove 'More Like This'So last week I wrote a journal on the intrusive eyesore that is the "More Like This" feature. Tons of people complained to HQ that we preferred it as a button, and why.
- Revert it back to a button. It's still button for a few Deviants, how hard is it to take it back to that?
- Make it collapsible or Drop Down menu.
- Move it further down the page, past the artists information and "More from this artist".
- Make it smaller than the the thumbnails of the artists own work.
- Make it customizable so we can choose what we feature beside our own artwork. As of now, it's advertising our old crap AND Scraps. (as well as other people's art we don't want there) I had to store my Scraps so they wouldn't show up in it
- show LESS thumbnails.
- The distribution of exposure is terribly unfair. many people are forced to advertise others, while some deviants only advertise their own work.
It's a good feature, and good idea, no
Spreading Semi-Realism appreciation!
'Cloud rhapsody' by *anndr
Since I believe the efforts of semi-realism artists are not sufficiently appreciated, because there are so many fantastic illustrations in this style that does not have the right visibility on here, I decided to create an article to advertise these artists that are, for me, the 'new faces' of this fashionable and yet so difficult art style.
First of all, Semi-realism is a drawing style derived from mangas but more complex in terms of style. Indeed, if we want to be more precise, it is the missing link between mangas and digital art. No giant eyes but neither skin blemishes.
I would really appreciate if dA could add a category for this particular art style but I can easily admit the boundaries to define this style are very labile.
Well, after this brief introduction, I'm featuring some samples of this style from real

it feels like she’s wearing a noose

that tightens around her throat with every day that passes
She nails a smile to her face
